Why Learning Hebrew Isn’t as Hard as You Think (Seriously!)

Hebrew looks intimidating at first glance. The script is unfamiliar, the words sound foreign, and the grammar seems complex. But here’s the truth: Hebrew is easier than you think. Here’s why.

1. The Alphabet is Smaller Than You Think

Hebrew has only 22 letters. No uppercase or lowercase variations. Once you learn them, you’re set. Compare that to English’s 26 letters plus endless cursive forms.

Pro tip: Focus on print letters first. Cursive can come later.

2. Pronunciation is Predictable

Unlike English, Hebrew pronunciation follows consistent rules. Once you know the sounds, you can read any word - even if you don’t know what it means. Check out our guide on Hebrew pronunciation for more.

Shalom

/ʃaˈlom/

Peace/Hello/Goodbye

A versatile word used for greetings and farewells.

3. No Verb Tenses to Memorise (At First)

Modern Hebrew uses just three main verb forms: past, present, future. No progressive tenses, no perfect tenses. Start with the present - it’s the easiest.

  • Present: Ani ohev (I love)
  • Past: Ani ahavti
  • Future: Ani ohav

4. Many Words Are Built from Roots

Hebrew words often derive from three-letter roots. Learn one root, and you unlock multiple related words. For example, the root K-T-V relates to writing: katav (he wrote), mikhtav (letter), ktovet (address).

5. You Already Know Some Hebrew

Words like shalom, mazel tov, and kosher are part of global vocabulary. You’ve got a head start.

Bottom line: Hebrew isn’t easy, but it’s easier than you think. Start small, focus on patterns, and build from there.
